Immigrants Gained More Employment To Fuel Economic Recovery

The record of the Canadian labor force in September shows that there is a steady increase in the employment rate for eligible immigrants. The current unemployment in Canada can be compared with that of the United States.

The number of immigrants hired under the Canadian labor force is rising at a steady pace now that people are regaining jobs at an accelerated rate.

Current trends in the labor market

A Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey states that there was a 2.1% increase in employment in September, which is a much faster rate as compared to August that witnessed a 1.4% jump. The data included in this report was sourced directly from the labor market in the week from September 13 to 19.

Considering that Canada has to go into complete lockdown in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus, the recovery rate so far has been impressive. The employment rate in Canada is within 720,000 jobs or 3.7% of the pre-coronavirus levels. The industries that have been hit the hardest and require more progress are retail trade industries and accommodation and food services.

The employment rate of new immigrants who came to Canada less than five years ago did not change much at all and is steady at around 63.6% in this post-pandemic world. This low movement can be attributed to the drastically less number of new immigrants who have been arriving in Canada since the pandemic and its accompanying travel restrictions.

Immigrants who settled in Canada over five years ago underwent a 1.7% increase in employment, all the way up to 57.8% in September. An earlier report had found that recent immigrants could lose employment faster in March and April because of their over-representation in the more low-wage jobs that are susceptible to layoffs.
