British Citizens Will Require LMIAs Temporarily

Now that 2020 has ended, British citizens will no longer be exempt from the Labor Market Impact Assessment or LMIA. The candidates who want to start their work in Canada from January 1, 2021, will have to take the LMIA as a mandatory requirement. This is going to be a temporary thing until the United Kingdom and Canada can establish their separate connections outside of the European Union.

What is LMIA?

The LMIA document is used by employers to show that they need to employ a foreign worker for a specific role. The Canadian government wants that assurance to know that Canadians have received a fair chance.

What’s Next?

The United Kingdom and Canada have entered into a transitional trade agreement named the Canada-U.K. Trade Continuity Agreement or TCA for the post-Brexit period. Now that the United Kingdom will no longer be a part of the European Union, Canada wanted to take measures that would prevent trade disruptions between the two countries.

This agreement takes inspiration from many of the conditions included in the CETA. British citizens will be considered exempt from the LMIA requirement even under this deal.

People from the United Kingdom were able to take advantage of the processing method via the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement until the end of 2020. Now they are no longer exempt from LMIA, and they have to prepare accordingly.

Canada expects the deal to be ratified by early 2021. British citizens must secure an LMIA from January 1st if they want to work in Canada but only until the Canada-U.K. TCA is implemented.
