The pandemic has reinforced the need for family and love for our well-being. Hence, Canada is trying its best to ensure that people can reunite with their loved ones without much hassle.
In late September, Canada announced that IRCC will expedite a maximum of 6000 spousal sponsorship applications monthly till the end of this year. This will enable more couples to come together.
Do you stand a chance?
Both permanent residents and Canadian citizens are allowed to provide sponsorship to their partners and help them in becoming permanent residents. In order to qualify for sponsorship, the candidate and their sponsor must prove to IRCC that they are related as spouses, common-law partners, or conjugal partners.
Canada recently introduced the 2021–2023 Immigration Levels Plan according to which the newcomer levels will increase significantly in the upcoming years. They are currently planning to invite about 80,000 immigrants annually through the spousal, partner, or children category. If current trends are anything to go by, most admissions in this category will be through spousal sponsorship.
In order to sponsor your partner, you must be an adult that is at least 18 years of age. You also need to prove that you are not getting some kind of social assistance (disability help is an exception) and that you have the financial means to provide for your partner.
If you want to get the process started, you must fill two applications. The sponsor has to fill a form and the prospective permanent residence candidate has to fill the other. You can get an application package directly from IRCC.
The processing should take around 12 months.
